notnon ho fratelli I don't have any brothers, I have no brothersnon ancora not yetnon che io non voglia not that I don't want tonon cedibile not transferable, non-transferable* * *non avv.1 (come negazione di un v.) not ( spesso contratto in n't con ausiliari o 'modal verbs'): non è vecchio, he isn't old; è meglio non indagare, we'd better not go into it; non vedendolo arrivare, cominciai a preoccuparmi, not seeing him arrive, I began to get worried // In frasi negative, come rafforzativo di un'altra negazione: non c'era nessuno, there wasn't anybody; non ci capisco un'acca!, I can't understand a word!; non vado mai a teatro, I never go to the theatre; non l'ho mai visto, I've never seen him; non era mai stato così felice, he had never been so happy ∙ Come si nota dagli esempi, l'avv. not non si usa in ingl. in presenza di un'altra negazione2 (in frasi interrogative, per lo più retoriche): non l'avevi detto proprio tu?, wasn't it you who said it?; chi non accetterebbe una simile proposta?, who wouldn't accept such an offer?; non avresti dovuto partire stasera?, shouldn't you have left this evening?; mi chiedo se non sarebbe stato meglio rinunciare, I wonder whether it wouldn't have been better to give up3 (come negazione di un agg. o avv. per affermare un concetto negandone l'opposto): non è improbabile, it's possible; è un'impresa non facile, it's a hard task; un uomo non privo di talento, a man not without talent; ha lavorato non poco per farsi una posizione, he worked hard to get on; non pochi la pensano come me, lots of people think the way I do; non sarà male ripeterlo, it won't do any harm to repeat it; non sempre si può fare quello che si vuole, you can't always do as you like; non senza fatica, not without effort; non del tutto, non completamente, not completely ∙ Come si nota dagli esempi, in questo caso la negazione è spesso espressa usando l'agg. o l'avv. di significato opposto4 (seguito da un compar.) no, not: doveva avere non più di vent'anni, he couldn't have been more than twenty; saranno stati non meno di mille, there must have been no fewer than a thousand; non più tardi di ieri, no later than yesterday; arriveremo non prima delle otto, we shall arrive not before eight o'clock; Note:Generalmente, l'avverbio non ha il suo equivalente diretto nell'inglese not. - Nel primo caso, l'equivalente diretto di brutto è ugly, ma quest'ultima parola è molto forte (= bruttissimo, decisamente brutto), ed è pertanto sostituibile, con riferimento a cose, da espressioni via via meno forti quali rather ugly, not much to look at o not very nice; con riferimento a persone, si può usare ancora not much to look at, o very ordinary-looking, not at all good-looking (per i maschi) e not very pretty, rather plain o plain (per le femmine).
